* The obligation to use seat belts has been extended to ALL categories of vehicles. It is also required to use restraint systems specially adapted for children

    * The European Cyclists’ Federation provides road safety education courses for cyclists.
The ECF has 47 member groups in 24 countries; it represents about 300 000 cyclists. It aims to raise road safety awareness amongst 20 000 participants in about 2 000 courses.
    * The number of bicycles per 1 000 inhabitants ranges from 52 in the Czech Republic to 1 000 in the Netherlands.
It is estimated that replacing one-third of city car trips with bicycles would cut traffic jams by 30%, motor vehicle pollution by 25% and carbon monoxide emissions by 30%.

    * In the United States, Australia and the European Union, work-related crashes account for between one-quarter and over one-third of all work-related deaths.

Over 50% of new cars registered in the UK are company owned or financed, over 10% of driving is work-related and drivers on work-related journeys (not including commuting) drive more than two and a half times the annual distance of drivers of private cars

The majority of crashes occurred during travel by peripatetic staff and in the delivery or collection of goods.

Another beaurocratic sham if you ask me... As we go into recession most people can't afford to get 3-4 lessons, neveremind 12. If this is being done everybody with a licence gone over 10 years or so should be required to take a manditory re test to see if they have the proficiencies to drive. I've cycled throughout the country and its not learner drivers that are the problem but elderly drivers that 'had a bit of pull' at the time they did their test. A very bad idea for an already overpriced country...

AS A PARNT MYSELF I THINK THE KNEW LAWS ARE TERRIBLE. THERE ARE NO NEED FOR THE COMPULSORY LESSONS. THE R PLATE IS SO STUPID IT MAKES ME MAD A FULL LICENSCED DRIVER HAVING TO HAVE THIS ON THERE CAR. IF THEY COULDNT DRIVE PROPERLY THEY WOULDNT OF GOT THERE FULL LICENSE. NO WAY SOULD THERE BE COMPULSORY LESSONS. THESE LESSONS WONT HELP SAVE PEOPLE LIFES THERE SWTILL GOING TO DRIVE THE SAME.

SWEEPING changes on how young motorists are taught to drive will be introduced before the end of the summer in an attempt to cut the carnage on our roads.Tough new rules will force learner drivers to undertake compulsory training before applying to sit their driving test.
